August 20th, 2003... New Orleans Archive Added

As most of you know, I back-dated a few entries after I returned from New Orleans.  It's August 20th and the August log is getting large.  So I am doing my regular monthly archive today.  There is new New Orleans entries posted just yesterday.  For those of you who haven't tuned in for a couple days, make sure to check out the new July 2003 Archive.  It has a couple new things.

Furthermore, I'm making a special Archive exclusively for New Orleans.  It contains all the July New Orleans log entries as well as more full size photos.  Now all the entries and photos are on one page.  Please visit the New Orleans Archive.

Additionally, the "Archives" Link at the top of the page now directs you to the archives index rather than last months page.  A new reader requested this last month because he had to page through several pages to start at the beginning and read forward.  I thought it was a good idea.  The archives index also indexes special pages I have added over the months including Stop Telemarketing and The Rules of Being Men.

August 19th, 2003... 2:16 p.m.... Jailhouse Bride

Bride in Connecticut Rages at Reception, Jailed

Aug 19, 11:35 AM (ET)

SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. (AP) - A North Haven bride spent part of her wedding night in a jail cell, after police said she hurled things at reception hall workers who closed the bar.

Adrienne T. Samen, 18, was arrested on criminal mischief and breach of peace charges Saturday after police responded to The Mill on the River restaurant.

When workers there closed the bar, Samen allegedly began throwing things, including wedding cake and vases. Samen left the restaurant, and police found her walking down the road in her gown.

While being taken into custody, police said she kicked the door and window of the police cruiser and tried to bite an officer.

She posted a $1,000 bond and was released Saturday night, police said. She was on her honeymoon Monday.

She is due in Manchester Superior Court on Aug. 28.

My two cents... I'm just wondering what the groom was thinking.  Was it...

A.  "That's my girl!  Now everyone knows why I love her."

B.  "Oh, Lord, what did I get myself into... I should have listened to mamma!"

C.  "Well, I still have to love her, after all she is my sister... uh... wife."

D.  All of the above.

August 14th, 2003... 8:19 p.m.... Arnold Schwarzenegger buys a Gateway

Arnold SchwarzeneggerI found this hilarious flash video of Arnold Schwarzenegger calling a Gateway computer sales rep.  Apparently a guy recorded sound bites from several Arnold movies.  He then used the bites to make a crank call to Gateway.

Arnold could be Governor of California in a few months.  I think it's great.  He's always been extremely politically involved and seems to have built a strong team behind him.  People say that because he's a movie star and body builder he can't be a politician.  Some times I wish other politicians had real jobs to fall back on!  We'd all be better off if we elected politicians who had actually worked in some other industry.

Vote for Arnold!  (Or at least Gary Coleman.)

August 11th, 2003... 7:57 am... White Nights

White NightsFor a guy in a wheelchair, I've always loved athleticism.  I'm a die hard sports fan, particularly racing, football and baseball.  But something else I've always admired is dance.  Some people considered dance effeminate, but I never did.  Anyone who can control there body with such style, grace and fluidity should be admired, regardless of their gender.

I can't remember the first time I watched racing or football, but I know exactly when my admiration for dancing began.  I saw the movie White Nights, starring Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines.  The movie came out in 1985, during the height of the cold war.  The movie was about a Russian dancer and his American counterpart who were attempting to escape from the Soviet Union.  It sounded like the kind of action packed flick I loved to watch at age 15.

Gregory Hine on Will and GraceIt turned out to have less action, but terrific dance scenes.  Baryshnikov was the master of ballet, and Hines the master of tap.  They managed to pull off a terrific blend of American/Russian, ballet/tap, action/art.

Gregory HinesIf you've never seen this movie, rent it.  It's not available on DVD, which is unfortunate, so you'll have to search the VHS racks.  I put it in my top 100, but it got there more out of originality than overall quality.  Rent it before you buy it, although on VHS you can get it for less than 10 bucks on Amazon.

You may be wondering why I thought of a movie I haven't seen since 1985.  Well, it's because the master of tap, Gregory Hines died last night at the young age of 57.  He'd been fighting cancer for quite a while.  It's always nice to offer the token well wishes to the family of someone who died too young, but in this case it's sincere.  I was a fan of Gregory Hines, and I wish his friends and family the best.

Go out this weekend and rent White Nights or something else from the Gregory Hines filmography.  I'd probably recommend Tap, The Cotton Club, or A Rage in Harlem.
